Welcome to the Faculty of Agriculture

Welcome to the Faculty of Agriculture.

Since 1934 the Faculty of Agriculture, formerly the historic Poppelsdorf Agricultural College, has enriched the spectrum of teaching and research available at the Friedrich-Wilhelm University of Bonn. The faculty not only offers traditional agricultural subjects but also covers agricultural and food systems sciences and geodesy, resulting in institutes within the faculty that provide a valuable complement to the six other University faculties.

Today, the faculty effectively collaborates across faculty boundaries, encourages innovation and creativity and enables the establishment of scientific research in our daily lives.

The problems faced today, such as global shortage of energy and raw materials, competing use of land for energy or food crops as well as the need to develop sustainable alternatives can not be solved without the meaningful interaction of fundamental and applied research.

Overproduction in industrialized countries on the one hand, and underproduction or malnutrition in developing countries on the other hand, have to be fought effectively. The provision of high quality, safe food in a fair value chain is an important contribution to a healthy environment.

Our University has been undergoing a profound structural change for several years due to the changing study requirements for European Universities (i.e. the Bologna Process) and changing conditions in the national organization of teaching and research. The University and the Agriculture Faculty have used the opportunities these changes have provided to optimise the institutional structure of the Faculty and achieve the targets set. Research-oriented and research-led BSc and MSc degree courses were introduced throughout the faculty, supported with strong research departments. Furthermore an innovative program of study and research incentives have been introduced. The scientific spectrum of our nutrition and food sciences and geodesy have been optimised to emphasise the synergies between these subjects.

This website aims to inform school-leavers, graduates, potential research partners and, of course, opinion leaders in politics and society about the unique profile of our faculty and its future.

Food – Feed – Energy (FFE)

Resources for life

Renewable resources are the basic requirement for human life. At a time of increasing world population, changing consumer habits and an ever increasing demand for food and energy , it is crucially important that resources are used in a sustainable and environmentally sound manner.

Under the motto “Food-Feed-Energy,” the Agriculture Faculty is dealing with: the establishment of nutritional concepts, the sustainable production of energy and the competing use of land as well as the impact of climate. Through the combination of natural, economic and social sciences and technical disciplines, we explore solutions to conserve resources for future generations. With innovative research, individual teaching and interdisciplinary work - we aim to achieve this goal. We want to maintain our broad subject base but concentrate in the future specifically on selected interdisciplinary topics.
