Analysis of socio-economic and logistical factors affecting selection of improved packagingof tomatoes during transportation

Improvements for tomato packaging in Arusha (Tanzania) exist – but why they are not accepted? Which factors are influencing the adoption behaviour of traders in the tomato supply chain?

To find answers to this question, I did an internship for 4,5 month in Arusha, Tanzania, at the AVRDC – World Vegetable Center (Eastern and Southern Africa), sponsored by GIZ as part of my master thesis at the University of Bonn.

Tomatoes that are squished, crashed, rubbed and with cuts are the usual picture at the Kilombero wholesale and retail market after transportation from the farm gate to the markets in Arusha. Traditional standard wooden crates are used to transport tomatoes. They are tightly packed (around 40 kg), no possibility of safely stacking them and the crates are constructed out of poor timber. All this results in losses between 30 and 40 % per crate. A simple brown paper with holes inside of the crates can reduce the damage by 6 %, it raises the quality of tomatoes and therefore the price for tomatoes.

A survey, based on the Technology Acceptance Model (Davis 1986) and the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen 1991), was conducted at the tomato wholesale market in Arusha. All in all, 48 wholesalers, 13 village collectors – collecting tomatoes from different farmers to bring them to the market – and 19 retailers have been interviewed. Research have been undertaken to analyze the acceptance of tomato wooden crates with lining by tomato traders with focus on the psychological construct of the traders and its influencing socio-economic and behavioral factors. What is the attitude of the trader towards an improved packaging? Does the trader feel responsible and able to implement an improved packaging? Is the trader influenced by his social environment or is he an innovator or entrepreneur?

Those and more questions I will figure out in my master thesis at the University of Bonn in the study Agriculture and Food Economics (AFECO), focus agribusiness.
